What are Shopify metafields and why should I use them?
Shopify metafields are custom fields that let you store additional data for resources like products, collections, customers orders, pages and more. They help you display custom information such as downloadable files, additional product details or extra metadata that isn’t available in Shopify’s default fields.
How do I create metafield definitions in Shopify 2.0?
To create metafields, go to Settings > Metafields in your Shopify admin, select the area where you want to add metafields (like Products or Collections), click Add Definition, give it a name, choose a content type, set validation rules if needed and save.
Once I’ve defined a metafield, how do I add values to it?
After creating a metafield definition, visit the relevant resource (for example a product), scroll down to the Metafields section in the admin, click the empty field next to your metafield, enter a value and save.
Can I display metafield data on my Shopify store’s theme?
Yes. In Shopify 2.0, you can connect metafields to your theme using the theme editor. Navigate to Online Store > Themes > Customize, open the relevant page template, add a section or block, click the Connect Dynamic Source icon and select your metafield to display it on the storefront.
Is there a way to edit metafields in bulk across multiple products?
Yes. Shopify allows bulk editing of metafields. Go to Products in Shopify admin, select all products you want to update, click Edit Products, then choose the metafield you want to update under Columns, add the new values and save to apply across selected items.
